Jim has had good contact with stoneworkers around England, particularly with Rory Young; a very skilful stone carver and designer in the Cotswolds.

After a short while working together Jim was seen as a trustworthy carver and was introduced to and taught the difficult procedure of creating stone statues.

In the last few years, Jim has been involved in working on several pieces now ”fixed” and displayed in churches and Manor houses in Dorset, Nottinghamshire, Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire.

From creating full-sized “maquettes” (models), setting up the working area, creating the apparatus used for accurate measurement of the pieces, to using power tools and hand-carving chisels to create the “roughed-out” work within 5mm of the finished statue, Jim has learned much from Rory Young.

The whole process of creating full-size stone sculptures is lengthy and requires a great deal of forethought in order to produce a finished work in various types of stone.

Often a statue will dignify a location with a central visual artwork that will last well into the future.

These are examples of works in which Jim has been involved during several stages of the carving. Click on the thumbnails for larger images and more examples.
